SECTION 1 - Installing Network Components

Topics:

· Installing Client Software
· Installing a Network Adapter
· Installing a Protocol
· Installing a Service
· Recap

Setting up a peer network can be divided into two steps. The first step is to configure the operating system and the second is to configure the network. The assumption here will be that Windows® networking is enabled but none of the components are installed.

This is a false assumption since windows installs several networking components by default. These components vary depending on the version of the operating system. In an effort to get everyone started at the same point let’s assume no networking components are installed.

figure 1 Fig.1

A. Installing the Client Software

  1. Open my computer
  2. control panel
  3. network
  4. click Add... button
  5. Highlight "Client" then click Add...
  6. Highlight "Microsoft" then "Client For Microsoft Networks"
  7. Click OK

B. Installing a Network Adapter

  1. After installing the "Client for Microsoft Networks" a prompt will appear asking you to select a network device
  2. In the Select Network adapters dialog box highlight the manufacturer and model of your network card and the model type
  3. Click OK
Alternately if the network card is not listed and there is a disk that came with the card, insert it in the CD-ROM or floppy drive and click Have Disk...

Follow the directory to the Win drivers and select the appropriate one.

Windows® 95...
At this point the Network dialog box should look like the one in figure 4. Two protocols were installed by default IPX/SPX and NetBEUI. Since we are only interested in NetBEUI:

C. Installing a Protocol

  1. you can highlight IPX/SPX and click the Remove button.
Windows® 98...
Windows 98, installs TCP/IP by default. TCP/IP is used for connecting to the internet through a modem or router. Our peer network requires NetBEUI to be installed.
  1. Click Add...
  2. Highlight "protocol" and click Add...
  3. Highlight "Microsoft" and "NetBEUI", and click OK
After installing NetBEUI you would then remove TCP/IP. Be aware that you will still need TCP/IP if you want to connect to the Internet through a modem or router. However, in this example of a simple peer network, TCP/IP is not needed.
